Russian-Japanese relations discussed at the forum «Japan – Sakhalin»

This event, organized on the initiative of the Consulate General of Japan, was attended by the representatives of different academic centers, nonprofit organizations, central and regional media. From the Russian side the meeting was attended by members of the Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU), representatives of public organizations, business circles, and expert community. RISS was represented by the head of Vladivostok Regional Center for Asian-Pacific Studies V. Gubin.

Consul General of Japan in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk A. Imamura stressed in his welcoming speech that the sanctions of Tokyo against Russia are mostly «nominal and forced», and Japan seeks to warn its allies and partners against further steps to tighten the sanctions regime.

The main focus in the reports of Japanese participants was paid to the assessment of the status and development prospects of bilateral trade and economic relations. Noting the rapidly increasing role of Japan as a trade and investment partner of Russia, associate professor of Sophia University (Tokyo) T. Anno paid attention to the necessity of improving the legal, tax and customs conditions of bilateral Japanese-Russian cooperation. V. Gubin in his speech told about development of the Far East as one of the factors shaping Russia's policy in the Asia-Pacific region.

According to the results of the discussion, the participants agreed that a better use of the economic potential of Sakhalin and other regions of the Russian Far East aims to make a significant contribution to the further development of trade-economic relations between Russia and Japan.
