The West tests the Olympic calm of Russia

The intention of the West to exert influence on Russia after a ban on Russians competing under their own flag at the Olympic Winter games in Pyeongchang is not too reasonable. “Such actions will change neither the policy of Russia, no public mood”, RISS expert Sergey Mikhaylov said.

The West is trying to make it clear to Russian leaders: “Look, if you are in the quarrel with the Western structures, therefore any of your projects, even the most resonant from the information point of view, will be completely discredited.” It's a kind of way to show the Russian people what will happen if the Russian leadership comes into conflict with the West, the expert added. “On the contrary, such an arrogant pressure makes Russians pull together and protect the interests of our country. The Russian leadership will not retreat from its firm position,” he noted.

Using the Olympic Games for political purposes is not a new phenomenon. “The first thing that comes to mind is the Olympics-80, when all the Western countries refused to participate in the Olympic games in Moscow in protest against the introduction of Soviet troops in Afghanistan. During the Olympic Games in 2008 in China various human rights groups promoted the issue of independence of Tibet and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous region,” RISS expert continued.

During the Olympics-2014 in Sochi was raised the issue of doping scandals. Due to this reason the Russian national team in athletics was excluded from participation in the Olympics-2016 in Rio de Janeiro. It is obviously that the Western decision-makers came to the conclusion that this subject is too good to abandon it as a pretext to making pressure on Russia.
