Russia and the West – how to find a window of opportunity for cooperation

«Russia and the West – what's next?» – this is the theme of the recent expert discussion platform «Open tribune» in the State Duma of the Russian Federation. The discussion was attended by the advisor to RISS Director E. Suponina.

The meeting was opened and led by the Chairman of the State Duma S. Naryshkin. «The reaction to Russia's actions in Syria is rather different: from enthusiastic support to sharp condemnation», he said. However, in his opinion, it is obvious that the current U.S. administration has committed many mistakes that led to the destabilization of the Middle East.

Advisor to RISS Director noted that «the chaos in the Middle East will only increase». In this regard, most speakers decided that the best option for all would be to agree on a single solution, as «the window of opportunity is still opened».

However, the LDPR leader V. Zhirinovsky predicted a further increase of contradictions, including the danger of military confrontation of Russia with some Western countries.

To avoid this, it is necessary to cooperate where possible, as it was last summer with a joint solution to the Iran's nuclear problem. However, it is important not to sacrifice principles, as Russia is doing now.

The meeting was attended by the Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs A. Pushkov, as well as high-ranking representatives of the Foreign Ministry, the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation, political scientists, and experts.
