The new U.S. National Security Strategy: the military aspect

The arms race, which is one of the fundamentals of the new U.S. National Security Strategy, aimed primarily at achieving the American leadership on the whole planet, RISS expert Grigory Tishchenko considers. The role of military force in the political course of the United States increases significantly and it occupies almost the first place in the priorities of this country. “If the strategy is implemented at full scale, the world will face a serious destabilization of international relations,” the analyst said.

The USA intends to achieve leadership on the basis of four principles, which are disclosed in four chapters of a national security strategy: to protect the lives and safety of Americans, to maintain the sovereignty of the United States with its values, institutions and territory intact, to achieve “peace through strength”, and to promote the prosperity and well-being of the nation and its people. The expert noticed that Russia and China has been identified as the main external opponents of the USA, North Korea and Iran has become the enemies of the second level, and after that the USA mentioned about the terrorist threat.

“Speaking about the military aspect of the document, there are a lot of directions: modernization of the armed forces, the nuclear weapons development, expanding of the U.S. influence in the space industry, the reform of the arms procurement system,” RISS expert noted. On the basis of this reform, the USA wants to significantly reduce the cost of weapons, terms of their creation, and to stop the armed forces reduction. One of the main priorities in the military field is to raise the battle-ready standards. The strategy also called for the U.S. allies to increase their monetary contributions to NATO.
