Sochi summit: step towards peace in Syria

Negotiations between Turkey's President Erdogan and Russian President Putin in Sochi have successfully finished. "The talks outcome is the suspension of the military operation. This will ensure the safety of civilians and stop the migration flow from the region. The territorial integrity of Syria and its independence as a sovereign power has also been unconditionally confirmed," RISS expert Vladimir Fitin said.

The Russian military police and the Turkish armed forces will patrol the area between the towns of Tell Abyad and Ras al-Ayn, assisting in the withdrawal of Kurdish forces. Russian-Syrian patrols will also start to the east and the west of the Syrian-Turkish border. The removal of Kurdish units should be completed within 150 hours by the Syrian units.

According to RISS expert, it is very important that the Syrian constitutional committee is expected to start its work soon. Establishing of the Syrian constitutional committee was a lengthy and complicated process. After the military operation finished, there is a real chance to begin its work.

"Russia-Turkey talks are a very serious step towards the peaceful settlement of the Syrian conflict. Other issues on the agenda are the government's control over the main oil fields and the agricultural farms of Syria around Deir ez-Zor, as well as the elimination of the terrorist enclave in Idlib. The main goal is to agree on mutually acceptable terms with Ankara for further peaceful settlement in Syria," V.Fitin pointed out.
