The international conference «The Role of Think Tank in the Korea-Russia Cooperation», which was organized by the Eurasian Research Institute of the Kookmin University and the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies, took place on October 21, 2015 in Seoul (Republic of Korea).

The conference was attended by over 30 leading foreign affairs specialists and public figures from the Republic of Korea (Kyonggi University, Yonsei University, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Samsung Economic Research Institute, Kookmin University, Korea National Diplomatic Academy, Korea Institute for National Unification, Hanyang University) and Russia (RISS, Moscow State Institute of International Relations, Higher School of Economics). RISS was presented by the main advisor to RISS Director K. Kokarev, head of the regional Center for Asian-Pacific Studies A. Gubin, senior research fellow at the Center for Asia and the Middle East V. Svedentsov.

The conference was held in a businesslike, friendly, and constructive atmosphere. Reports and speeches were devoted to various aspects of interaction between Russia and Korea, in particular, the prospects for the implementation of major transport and energy projects, as well as the problem of expansion of the cross-border cooperation at the regional level between the Far Eastern subjects of the Russian Federation and business circles of Korea. Many conference participants stressed the importance of national research institutions in expanding economic, political and cultural cooperation between the two countries.

Kokarev made a report on the new foreign policy of China (in the context of Xi Jinping’s visit in the United States and his participation in the 70th session of the UNO). The report focused on the characteristics of the «new stage» of bilateral relations between the two countries and the need for more active cooperation of Korea with other states of the region, including Russia. V. Svedentsov in his report titled «Eurasian initiative as a plan for the peaceful prosperity of Eurasia» emphasized the importance of making «Korean island» a more integrated part of Eurasia and the possibility of interfacing this initiative with the Chinese infrastructure projects and the EEU. A. Gubin in his speech «Military-technical cooperation of Russia with the countries of the North-East Asia» touched on the possibility of expanding cooperation with the countries in the region, in particular with the Republic of Korea, in the conditions of declining military-technical cooperation with China and India.
