RISS expert recalled that on November 25, the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS), which was under US control, had presented a report on the ongoing situation in Nicaragua. The report accuses the Nicaraguan government of human rights and constitutional violations. After that Trump extended the sanctions against Nicaragua for another year, introduced back in November 2018. He also accused Nicaragua government of widespread rights violations and repressionsthat undermine democracy. The Head of the White House claimed that Nicaragua constituted an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.
I.Pshenichnikov underscored that the USA used the OAS as a propaganda tool. It perfectly worked against Bolivia, and now America is trying to use it against Nicaragua. The OAS provoked street protests against President Evo Morales after the Bolivian presidential election on October 20. The OAS report on the ongoing situation in Nicaragua is a copy of its reports on Venezuela and Bolivia. For greater political resonance, the OAS held a public hearing of the report at its Permanent Council on 25 November.
In expert's opinion, a series of nationwide anti-government protests in Nicaragua should be expected. They already took place in the spring of 2018. Then the Nicaraguan government brought the situation under control and accused the United States of carrying out a soft coup d'etat in Nicaragua. The US refused the classic pattern of overthrowing undesirable governments in Latin America, as it was throughout the 20th century. The Nicaraguan government has repeatedly stated that Washington organized and funded the paramilitary forces, which terrorized the population. The purpose of terrorism is to create an atmosphere of chaos and fear in the country, deliberately provoking the government into retaliation, and then accuse it of repressions against peaceful residents to overthrow the legitimate government, RISS expert considers.
The OAS today is, quite literally, reading from a script written in Washington that aimed at overthrowing Ortega's government. The US doesn't like that Nicaragua pursues an independent policy and has friendly relationship with Russia, Cuba, and Venezuela. There is little doubt that soon there will be a new Nicaraguan Maidan, I.Pshenichnikov believes.
