The conference was attended by leading experts of RISS, representatives of the International Affairs Committee of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian International Affairs Council, Primakov Institute of World Economy and International Relations, Higher School of Economics, Institute of Asia and Africa of Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University, Institute of the CIS countries.
The experts noted that the goal of US actions in Syria is to weaken Iran’s regional influence. The results of the first months of Trump’s presidency allows researchers to make conclusions about the emerging contours of American policy in the Middle East, particularly, the gradual formation of the anti-Iran camp within Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and the Arab countries of the Persian Gulf.
Experts are also concerned about Turkey’s inconsistent and ineffectual regional policy, for example, the statements of President Erdogan, who supported the American strikes on Syria. The researchers noted that the victory in Turkey’s constitutional referendum could disrupt the course of the Astana negotiation process.
Conference participants expressed general opinion on the persistence of uncertainty of the Syrian conflict and preservation of the territorial integrity of the SAR.
