RISS expert drew attention to the fact that countries that categorically didn’t want to accept migrants and even didn’t visit the meeting were Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, and Slovakia. “At the same time, the arrival of the Italian Prime Minister with a pre-prepared package of documents served to resolve the migration crisis was a big surprise. Italy is now bearing the brunt of Europe’s migrant crisis. The Prime Minister offered to create special migration centers in the countries where migratory flows originate and also supported the idea of E.Macron to organize such centers in the EU. This idea has been discussed for quite a long time as none of the countries wants such a migration camp on its territory,” O.Petrovskaya said. At the summit, Italy and France also stated that it is necessary to take measures to punish the EU countries that don’t want to assist states in withstanding the current high-inflow of migrants.
Migrant problems erode EU cohesion
Migration crisis is a real threat to EU cohesion, RISS expert Oksana Petrovskaya commented on the informal summit of 16 EU member states in Brussels, dedicated to this problem. “This mini-summit was focused on overcoming the contradictions between the countries on the problems of the migration flow. Some countries support a policy of solidarity and redistribution of migrants between EU member states, and some of them fear the dissolution of their own identity in a new multi-ethnic culture that has nothing to do with Christianity. In general, no one expected anything from this interim meeting, which was held on the eve of the summit on June 28-29,” the expert pointed out.
