Mass protests over George Floyd’s case, who was choked to death by a police officer during his detention in Minneapolis, have divided the United States, RISS expert Ilya Kravchenko says. “American society is split between those who support the current regime and those who want police reforms including police budget cut and shift of these resources into health and safety spheres,” he added.
Kravchenko recalled that from one side, Trump threatened to deploy the US military to quell civil unrest and give police more powers. From another side, the mayor of Minneapolis, where Floyd was killed, said that he was all for disbanding police departments; New York plans to strip all police funding. The New York City Police Department with its annual budget of $6 billion makes it is one of the biggest police departments in the world budget wise.
RISS expert drew attention to the fact that Friends TV show producer had already publicly apologized that there were no black actors in this TV series. Reddit co-founder has resigned and urged the company to replace him with a black candidate. Racism has penetrated all levels of the society and not gone away; nobody is willing to take responsibility and make an important step in addressing this issue.
“Unfortunately, polarization is highly dividing American society now; mass protests will only aggravate today’s situation. This will be very difficult for the US government to curb these rebel sentiments. Who would have thought that after the American Civil War racism would remain America’s biggest problem? Even today, African-Americans still lack the same opportunities of economic security as their white counterparts. This unsolved issue is still unchanged for both the Republicans and Democrats. Trump has absolutely nothing to do with this. This is just a political tool for those who are trying to score political points,” he concluded.
