Russian-Indonesian relations: their development and prospects

RISS expert Ivan Belikov examines the development of Russian-Indonesian ties. The analyst notes that the Indonesian society has an overall favorable opinion of Russia, which is largely based on the historical memories of the USSR's assistance to Indonesia during the anti-colonial struggle.

Today, Moscow and Jakarta are cooperating on a wide range of trade and economic issues, and there is great potential for growth in such industries as agriculture, food, and energy. Despite pressure from the US and its allies, the Indonesian government insisted on inviting the Russian delegation to the G-20 summit in Bali. Besides, many Indonesians today comprehend Russia's criticism of the West's enforced neocolonial vision of world order.
