"The situation in the world economy is comparable to spring in the mountains. This is the time of year when avalanches are most likely to occur. Avalanches can be triggered even by one gunshot. Such a shot for the global economy can now be the coronavirus pandemic and a sharp drop in world oil prices," RISS expert Vyacheslav Kholodkov said.

The global economy is being hit by various economic restrictions. However, pandemic has not been declared yet. The world now is in a state of turmoil, Belyaev considers.

US-China trade war hits economy harder than coronavirus

The first G20 Finance officials' meeting in Riyadh in 2020 was focused on the coronavirus impact on the world economy. "At the beginning of this year, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) kept its forecast for China's 2020 economic growth unchanged at 6%. Now the forecast has been adjusted to 5.6%. Global economic growth forecasts for 2020 have been revised down by to 0.1%," RISS expert Nikolai Troshin said.

Coronavirus as a challenge to the global economy

China's coronavirus outbreak can seriously damage the world economy, RISS expert Mikhail Belyaev believes. He recalled that Hubei’s provincial capital of Wuhan, the place where the coronavirus outbreak had emerged, was one of the main centers of China's economic development. He warned that China's economic growth would slow to 1%, if not to prevent the viral disease from spreading.
