Migration crisis as an indicator of EU collapse
The migration crisis threatens to destroy the EU, RISS expert Oksana Petrovskaya considers. "We can observe some separate blocks that are united by their approaches to the migration problems and the future of the EU. The problem is that for the past two years countries have not been able to develop common criteria and migration policy that would suit everyone," she added.
The EU tries to stem migrant flow
In the European Union, migration crisis points to deeper internal political problems, RISS expert Oksana Petrovskaya commented on the Final Declaration of the EU Summit in Brussels. “The text of the Declaration has proved to be full of general phrases. A single decision hasn’t been accepted: the Europeans agreed that it is necessary to strengthen the external borders, to allocate more money to support the Frontex system, to save refugees who may die in the Mediterranean Sea, to create special regional camps for their distribution, but all this is on an entirely voluntary basis,” she explained.
Migrant problems erode EU cohesion
Migration crisis is a real threat to EU cohesion, RISS expert Oksana Petrovskaya commented on the informal summit of 16 EU member states in Brussels, dedicated to this problem. “This mini-summit was focused on overcoming the contradictions between the countries on the problems of the migration flow. Some countries support a policy of solidarity and redistribution of migrants between EU member states, and some of them fear the dissolution of their own identity in a new multi-ethnic culture that has nothing to do with Christianity. In general, no one expected anything from this interim meeting, which was held on the eve of the summit on June 28-29,” the expert pointed out.
